Acknowledgments and Jurats are two of the most common notarial acts performed in California.
The purpose of an acknowledgment is for a signer to declare to a Notary that he or she has willingly signed a document. The signer personally appears before the Notary, is identified, and signs the document or acknowledged that he or she signed the document.
The purpose of a jurat is for a signer to swear to or affirm the truthfulness of the contents of a document.
NOTARY DISCLAIMER:
California notaries are prohibited from explaining or interpreting the contents of any document, performing any duties that may be construed as the practice of law, such as the preparation, drafting, or selection or determination of any legal document, or giving advice in relation to any legal document or matter.
